ERT built the world's first private emissions registry in 1997. Since its launch ERT has worked with major US companies in key emitting sectors providing technical support to enable accurate emissions tracking using our on-line serialized registry system. Over 100 million tons of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (in the form of CO2 equivalent units) from corporate, utility and other private sector emitters have been registered, including 21 million tons of emission reductions. Our system has provided the infrastructure for international trades of GHG reductions including one of the first ever between a US and Canadian company. Annual transfers have been as high as 2.1 million tons CO2-e reflecting the confidence market participants place in ERT's tracking systems and underlying verification protocols. We have designed the newly updated GHGRegistry® to:
- Provide transparency over ownership claims concerning emission reductions
- Support market transactions of verified emission reductions (VERs)
- Record validated greenhouse gas emissions profiles
- Document the environmental integrity of registered GHG emissions
- Expand into tracking of other environmental commodities in emerging markets such as nutrient trading in watersheds
ERT has created a rigorous but streamlined process to enable cost-effective registration of high quality GHG inventories and Verified Emission Reductions.
GHGRegistry® members may use ERT’s infrastructure to support their internal emissions management functions or as a public disclosure and public offer facility.
Buyers of VERs may use the GHGRegistry® to identify and contact potential sellers and to support and document their purchases.
Sellers of VERs may use the GHGRegistry® to advertise and promote their projects, document their validity and support the sales process.
